American College Students Report Online Gaming Casinos CrazeUniversity newspapers around the United States have recently been publishing articles on the popularity of online gaming casinos among their students.Online gaming casinos are a growing trend among college students. In 2005, according to the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey, an organization that treats addictions to online gaming casinos and other types of gambling dependencies, 20.9% of American college students have bet online. This represents a close to 100% increase from 11.7% only five years ago in 2000. Online gaming casinos are a nightly activity in many dorm rooms across the country. Internet poker sites are particularly popular. Many students say that they value the community aspect of online gaming casinos, where many students play regular games against the same group of opponents every week, or even every night. Some students even claim that they earn their college tuition, or supplement their low- paying jobs, with income form online poker playing. “I can make $50 an hour on some nights, if I’m really lucky,” said Jake Werther, a senior at New York University. However, some college students realize the hard way that the world of online gaming is not all fun and games. “I have this buddy who used his parents’ credit card at an online gambling site, and he racked up $6,000 in debt over a few months,” said Werther. “It took him a long time to pay that back.”
